Gerald Carter

Gerald was born on June 23, 1949, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Jesse Richard and Edna Mae Carter. He was the oldest of four siblings and had a twin sister, Jessica. Gerald attended Indianapolis Public Schools and graduated from Crispus Attucks High School in 1967, where he was an active participant in the tennis team, chess team, science club, and key club. He went on to attend Anderson University and Indiana Wesleyan University, earning both his bachelor's degree in Management and MBA. It was at Anderson University in 1971 that Gerald met the love of his life, Diana. The two were united in holy matrimony on October 7, 1972, beginning a marriage that would span 53 years. To this union were born two children, Gerald II and Toneka. Gerald was a devoted man of faith. He was baptized and served as a faithful member of Arrow Heights Community Church of God in Anderson, Indiana, under the leadership of Reverend Robert Terry. He also briefly attended Eastside Church of God in Anderson, Indiana, where he participated in the choir. After relocating to Georgia, Gerald joined Tabernacle International Church, where he completed the church's School of Ministry course in 2015 under the leadership of Apostle Fritz Musser. He was also an active participant in the Hanamil Online Prayer and Bible Study Group. Gerald's professional life spanned more than four decades in the medical field. He worked primarily as a medical technologist and microbiologist at Community Hospital in Anderson, Indiana, where he was later promoted to night supervisor. He also worked in the laboratory of his sister, Debra Miller, MD at her medical office in Indianapolis, Indiana, and was briefly employed as a sales representative at Ervin Construction Company, owned by his twin sister Jessica and her husband, Rupert. As a teenager, Gerald delivered newspapers, an early sign of his strong work ethic. After moving to Georgia twelve years ago, he worked briefly at Atlanta Medical Hospital until his retirement in 2016. Beyond his career, Gerald gave generously of his time to others. He volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for neglected and abused youth, and he served as a youth tennis instructor for the Urban League in Anderson, Indiana. Some of Gerald's fondest memories were made as a child, fishing and hunting during family vacations in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was also known for his love of his dog, Major. Gerald Carter passed away peacefully on August 22, 2026, at the age of 77. Gerald was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Richard and Edna Mae Carter; stepbrother James Carter; and stepsister Shirley Johnson. He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 53 years, Diana Carter; son, Gerald Carter II; daughter, Toneka (Wesley) Etienne of Dacula, Georgia; twin sister, Jessica Ervin of Simpsonville, SC; sister, Dr. Debby Miller of Indianapolis, Indiana; sister, Brenda Owens of Indianapolis, Indiana; sister, Janet (Stephen) Grundy of Dayton, Ohio; stepsister, Betty Jo Wiley of Indianapolis, Indiana; sisters-in-law, Nancy Powell, Debra Adams, and Tarri Adams of Anderson, Indiana; grandchildren, Torrance Powell of Arizona and Nia and Nadia Etienne of Dacula, Georgia; and a beloved host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, church family, and friends. Gerald's life was one of faith, service, and devotion to his family. He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
