Bonnie Jean Bracewell Smith, 75, of New Smyrna Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully, surrounded by her loving family, on July 12, 2026. Born on February 20, 1951, in Dublin, Georgia, Bonnie lived a life defined by service, education, resilience, an unyielding faith, and unwavering love for her family. Bonnie was the beloved daughter of George Raymond Bracewell and Willa Jean Bracewell. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, William Raymond Bracewell, and her nephew, James George Bracewell. She is lovingly survived by her three children: Ranna Smith Edwards, George Robert “Robby” Smith, and Laura Caitlin Smith. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Peyton Ansley Edwards, Ashton George Edwards, Lillian Mae Smith, Madeleine Grace Smith, and Christopher Wade Smith. Her greatest joy was watching her family grow, and she cherished every moment spent with them. Education was not simply Bonnie’s profession—it was her life’s calling. Over a remarkable career spanning more than 50 years in both public and collegiate education, she inspired thousands of students as an English and Drama teacher, director, mentor, and advocate. She was honored as Teacher of the Year and retired as a respected board member of the Georgia Thespian Society, leaving a lasting impact on educators and students throughout the state. Her own academic achievements reflected the excellence she expected of herself and encouraged in others. Bonnie graduated as Valedictorian of Dublin High School and Salutatorian of Georgetown College in Kentucky. She believed deeply in the power of education, literature, and the arts to change lives. Beyond the classroom, Bonnie found joy in reading, writing, traveling, gardening, solving puzzles, and diving into a good murder mystery. She was a gifted historian with an endless curiosity and appreciation for the stories that shaped people and places. She treasured time with her family and friends and especially loved the companionship of her beloved dog, Rooster. Those who knew Bonnie will forever remember her quick wit, brilliant mind, and unmistakable personality. She was hardworking, dedicated, loving, fiercely intelligent, kind, and incredibly generous. She never hesitated to help someone in need and believed in giving of herself whenever she could. She was also delightfully feisty, wonderfully stubborn, and never missed an opportunity to correct a grammatical mistake or help someone pronounce a word properly—a trait that often brought laughter to those around her and became one of her most endearing trademarks. Her unyielding faith was the foundation of her life, providing her with strength, hope, and grace through every triumph and every challenge she faced. Bonnie was a fighter in every sense of the word. She faced life’s challenges with courage, determination, and grace, always moving forward with strength and conviction. She was a woman ahead of her time—an educator, leader, and trailblazer whose influence reached far beyond the classroom. Her legacy lives on in the countless students she inspired, the colleagues she mentored, and the family she loved so deeply. A Celebration of Life will be held in early October 2026, with details to be announced at a later date. Though Bonnie’s presence will be deeply missed, her lessons, laughter, strength, and love will continue to guide all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her steadfast faith, enduring kindness, and remarkable example will remain an inspiration to everyone whose lives she touched. Her life was one of purpose, compassion, and extraordinary impact, and her memory will forever remain a blessing.
