Dot Duncan

October 27, 1922 - September 5, 2021

DUNCAN-“Dorothy the Riveter” Dorothy Johnson Duncan, 98, of Lawrenceville entered into Eternal Rest on September 5, 2021. A Funeral Service will be held at 2 PM on Tuesday, September 7, 2021, in the Lawrenceville Chapel of Tim Stewart Funeral Home. Rev. Adam Hildebrandt will officiate. Interment will follow at Gwinnett Memorial Park. Originally from Chattahoochee, Georgia, she attended Sugar Hill High School and began working at the Bona Allen Shoe Factory in Buford in 1940 and then at the Monarch Clothing Company in Atlanta until 1942. As a member of the Greatest Generation, she answered her country’s call to service when she returned to Bona Allen to repair and remanufacture damaged Army boots. In 1944, she took a job with Bell Aircraft in Marietta as a riveter and then later as an inspector on the B-29 Superfortress bomber. She worked on the night shift in the hot and noisy aircraft factory that ran around the clock to build the world’s most advanced aircraft. After the war, she graduated from Beauty School in Gainesville and began working in salons and beauty parlors in Atlanta and Decatur. She married T.W. “Dub” Duncan, Jr. in 1948 and began working from her home beauty shop after her son Gary was born in 1953. She continued working in her home shop until she retired in 1988. Though retired and now residing in Lawrenceville, she continued to do her friends’ hair up until the mid-2000’s. Dorothy was an active member of Lawrenceville First United Methodist Church where she was a Sunday School teacher, a member of the Joy Sunday School class and sang in the choir. She was also involved with several senior citizen’s groups around Lawrenceville. She knew everyone on her street and would talk to anyone as if she had been their friend for years. She is preceded in death by her parents L. C. and Angie Johnson, her brothers Edmond and Winton Johnson, her sister Ruby Fox, her husband T.W. Duncan, Jr. and her son, Gary Duncan. She is survived by her daughter-in-law Pamela Bates Duncan of Roswell, grandsons Travis (Bonnie) Duncan of Statesboro and Mickey Duncan of Canton, great-grandchildren William and Noralee Duncan of Statesboro and her long-time caregiver Salma Furbush of Douglasville. The family will receive friends from 12:00 PM – 2:00 PM on Tuesday, September 7, 2021 at Tim Stewart Funeral Home, 300 Simonton Rd. SW, Lawrenceville, GA 30046. 770-962-3100.
